This case presents a custom brass clamping pin produced on a Swiss-type lathe. The component integrates a small-diameter split shaft, a threaded transition, a long cylindrical locating section, a tapered shoulder, and a flanged base with a lateral hole. These features combine locating, elastic clamping, and mechanical connection functions in one compact part.
Structure and Machining Features
The upper shaft contains a through slot that creates the elastic action required for clamping. Its small diameter and thin remaining walls make the feature sensitive to cutting force and heat. The base includes a transverse small hole produced with live tooling, allowing turning and side-drilling features to be completed from a consistent machining datum.
Machining Challenges and Control Strategy
The split shaft must retain its geometry after the slot is opened. Machining sequence, tool sharpness, cutting load, and part support therefore need to be controlled to reduce distortion. Slot width is a functional dimension because it directly affects elastic clamping behavior; both sides of the slot must remain intact and free from edge breakage.
The lateral base hole adds a second-direction feature. Live-tool drilling requires controlled spindle orientation, tool runout, and feed so that hole position and diameter remain consistent. Deburring must remove residual material from the slot, threads, and cross-hole without rounding functional edges or changing the clamping profile.
Quality Control Focus
- Small shaft diameter, straightness, and visible deformation
- Slot width, continuity, and edge integrity
- Thread profile and transition geometry
- Lateral hole diameter and position
- Burr-free slot, thread, and cross-hole intersections
- Functional locating and elastic clamping performance where specified by the drawing or inspection fixture
Project Value
Integrating the split shaft, thread, locating body, and lateral hole in one Swiss-machined component supports repeatable positioning and compact quick-locking assemblies. Stable control of the slot and cross-hole reduces assembly interference, inconsistent clamping force, and rework, while clearly defined inspection points make incoming and production quality checks easier to execute.
