Design Guidelines

Use these general DFM guidelines to improve machinability, reduce setup risk, and control cost for 5-axis CNC machined parts. Final manufacturability depends on material, geometry, tolerance requirements, tool access, and fixturing conditions.

Feature

Guideline

Minimum Hole Diameter

≥ 0.8 mm recommended; smaller holes can be reviewed case by case

Minimum Slot Width

≥ 1.0 mm recommended; narrow or deep slots require engineering review

Minimum Wall Thickness

Metals: ≥ 0.8 mm; Plastics: ≥ 1.0–1.5 mm depending on geometry

Internal Corners

Add internal radii whenever possible; larger radii allow stronger tools and better surface finish

Deep Pockets

Keep pocket depth within 4× tool diameter where possible; use larger corner radii for better tool access

Multi-Angle Features

5-axis machining supports angled holes, curved surfaces, undercuts, and features on multiple sides

Tight Tolerances

Apply tight tolerances only to critical features; ±0.01 mm is possible where design, material, and process allow

Material Suggestions

Aluminum 6061/7075, Stainless Steel, Titanium, Brass, Copper, PEEK, POM, Nylon
