As Machined
The standard CNC machining finish retains visible tool marks and a natural metallic appearance without additional surface treatment. It is suitable for functional prototypes, internal components, fixtures, and parts where appearance is not the primary requirement.
Smooth Machining
Smooth machining uses refined cutting parameters and additional finishing passes to reduce visible tool marks and achieve a more uniform machined surface. It is suitable for precision components, mating surfaces, visible metal parts, and applications requiring improved surface quality without a separate coating.
Anodizing Type II
Improves corrosion resistance, surface durability, and appearance for aluminum parts. Available in clear and multiple colors for housings, brackets, panels, and other cosmetic or general-purpose components.
Anodizing Type III / Hardcoat
Provides a harder and more wear-resistant anodized layer for functional aluminum parts.
Fine Machining
Creates a smoother, more uniform machined surface with minimal visible tool marks. Suitable for precision parts, mating surfaces, and components requiring controlled surface roughness without additional coating.
Vapor Smoothing
Vapor smoothing reduces visible layer lines and seals the surface of compatible 3D-printed thermoplastic parts, creating a smoother, more uniform, and often glossier finish. It is suitable for housings, ducts, fluid-handling parts, consumer products, and functional components requiring improved appearance and easier cleaning.
Bead Blasting
Bead blasting creates a uniform matte or satin surface by reducing visible machining marks and minor surface imperfections. It is suitable for aluminum, stainless steel, and other metal parts that require a clean, consistent industrial appearance or surface preparation before selected finishing processes.
Brushed + Electropolishing
Directional brushing creates a consistent linear texture, while electropolishing smooths microscopic surface peaks, removes embedded contaminants, and improves the corrosion resistance and cleanability of stainless steel parts. This combined finish is suitable for equipment housings, panels, food-processing components, medical equipment parts, and other visible or hygienic applications.
Powder Coating
Powder coating creates a durable, uniform protective finish with good resistance to corrosion, scratches, abrasion, and everyday wear. Available in a wide range of colors, textures, and gloss levels, it is suitable for sheet metal enclosures, brackets, panels, covers, frames, and other exposed metal parts.
Electroless Nickel Plating
Provides uniform nickel coating for corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and improved surface hardness.
Chromate Conversion Coating
Adds corrosion protection and electrical conductivity while keeping dimensional change minimal.
Black Oxide
Creates a dark surface finish with mild corrosion resistance and reduced light reflection.
Polishing
Removes machining marks on primary surfaces and creates a brighter, smoother cosmetic surface.
Brushing
Creates directional grain lines on the surface, commonly used for stainless steel and aluminum appearance parts.
Surface Treatment Selection Guide
Product Marking
Add logos, serial numbers, part numbers, symbols, and QR codes using laser marking, screen printing, or pad printing. The appropriate method depends on the part material, geometry, color, durability, and quantity.
Reduce Friction
Low-friction treatments for sliding and moving components. Options include DLC coating, PTFE-based coating, and electroless nickel plating for improved wear performance and smoother operation.
Outdoor Protection
Durable finishes for metal parts exposed to moisture, UV, weather, and corrosive environments. Options include powder coating, zinc coating, hardcoat anodizing, and electrophoretic coating.
Surface Smoothing & Polishing
Reduce surface roughness, machining marks, and 3D-printing layer lines with electropolishing, mechanical polishing, or vapor smoothing.
Maintain Electrical Conductivity
Chromate conversion coating, tin plating, nickel underplating, and gold plating for reliable conductivity and corrosion protection.
Improve Appearance
Bead blasting, brushing, polishing, anodizing, painting, and powder coating for a clean, consistent, and professional finish.
Improve Wear Resistance
Hardcoat anodizing, hard chrome plating, PVD coating, and DLC coating for improved surface hardness, wear resistance, and longer service life.
Improve Corrosion Resistance
Anodizing, passivation, zinc plating, electroless nickel plating, and powder coating for improved protection against moisture, oxidation, chemicals, and corrosive environments.

Surface Treatment Design Guidelines
Guideline | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
Define Critical Surfaces | Mark A-side and B-side surfaces for cosmetic parts so the most visible areas receive the highest appearance control. |
Consider Coating Thickness | Anodizing, powder coating, plating, and other coatings can add thickness and affect holes, threads, fits, and mating surfaces. |
Protect Critical Threads and Fits | Threads, precision holes, sealing surfaces, and tight assembly features may need masking or post-finishing inspection. |
Match Finish to Material | Not every finish works with every material. For example, anodizing is for aluminum, black oxide is commonly used for steel, and vapor smoothing applies to selected 3D printed plastics. |
Control Batch Appearance | For visible parts, define acceptable color, gloss, texture, and grain direction to reduce variation between parts. |
