Product Information
Manufacturing Process CNC milling Part Type Heat sink housing Material 6061 aluminum alloy Post-Processing Ultrasonic cleaning and oil removal Structural Features Tall thin fins, countersunk and through-holes, small holes, and shaped openings Product Overview
This CNC-machined 6061 aluminum heat sink housing combines a dense array of tall, thin fins with several opening and mounting features in one component. The fins provide a large exposed metal surface, while countersunk holes, through-holes, small holes, and shaped windows support its housing geometry. Ultrasonic cleaning removes residual machining oil without concealing the machined surface.
Structure and Machining Features
The tall fins are thin-walled features with limited stiffness during milling. Their height and close spacing leave little room for cutter access and increase sensitivity to cutting forces. The same housing also contains holes of different sizes and forms, so the position of each mounting and passage feature must remain consistent with the drawing and mating assembly.
Machining Challenges and Control Strategy
Thin, high fins are vulnerable to vibration marks, chipped edges, bending, and permanent distortion. Control starts with sharp cutters and cutting parameters selected for 6061 aluminum, using a suitably high spindle speed and a light, controlled cutting load. Stable workholding and a planned machining sequence help limit force on unsupported fins. Hole and window machining requires a consistent datum so countersunk holes, through-holes, and small holes retain their intended positional relationships.
Quality Control Focus
Inspection should focus on fin straightness and edge condition, visible chatter, and the position and condition of the mounting and passage holes. The shaped openings and countersinks should be checked against the drawing before assembly. After ultrasonic cleaning, the surface should be free of residual machining oil.
Project Value
The useful outcome is a housing whose thin fins remain intact and whose openings align with the intended assembly. Controlling fin damage and hole position during machining helps reduce scrap and fit-related risk, while giving future repeat orders clear features to inspect.
