CNC Grinding: When Machined Parts Need a Grinding Operation
A machined part needs grinding when its functional geometry, surface texture, hardened condition or fit cannot be controlled reliably by the preceding milling or turning operation alone. Grinding should solve a defined requirement. It should not be added automatically because a drawing says “smooth.”
The buyer’s job is to identify the surface that matters, its datum relationship, finished size, form requirement, texture and inspection method. The supplier can then decide whether turning, milling, honing, lapping or a grinding route is appropriate.
Four reasons grinding enters the process plan
1. Functional size and fit
Bearing journals, precision bores, guide surfaces and sealing lands may need a repeatable final size after rough machining or heat treatment. The drawing must identify the mating condition and acceptance limit instead of relying on a generic “grind to fit” note.
2. Form and datum relationship
A diameter can measure within size while still having unacceptable roundness, cylindricity or runout. A flat surface can meet thickness while being poorly related to the assembly datum. Grinding becomes useful when the process must control these relationships, not only remove tool marks.
3. Surface texture with a functional purpose
Seals, sliding interfaces and bearing seats may require a particular texture and lay. Norton notes that surface finish depends on the complete grinding system: operating parameters, wheel dressing, grit, coolant delivery and machine condition. A lower Ra target can increase cycle time and thermal risk, so it should be tied to function.
4. Accuracy after heat treatment
Heat treatment can change size or shape. A common route is to leave controlled stock, heat treat, then finish the critical feature. The sequence, allowance and hardness condition must be agreed before machining; they cannot be guessed after the part is already at final size.
Surface, OD and ID grinding are not interchangeable
Surface grinding is associated with controlled planes and parallel relationships. OD grinding works on external cylindrical features, while ID grinding addresses bores. Centerless grinding can be efficient for suitable cylindrical production parts, but the geometry, quantity and datum strategy determine whether it fits the job.
The RFQ does not need to prescribe a machine unless the process itself is contractually required. It does need to define the finished feature well enough for the supplier to choose and quote a route.
Do not specify Ra alone
A single roughness number does not describe waviness, form error, lay direction, isolated defects or the relationship to another feature. Identify the functional surface, the applicable texture parameter and the measurement direction and location. For a sealing or sliding interface, include the mating component and operating condition when relevant.
If a surface is cosmetic only, say so. Decorative polishing, deburring and precision grinding solve different problems and should not be combined into one ambiguous finish note.
Plan stock allowance and datums before rough machining
The rough operation must leave enough material for cleanup without creating excessive grinding time or heat. Allowance depends on part size, material, prior process, heat treatment, distortion risk and required geometry. There is no responsible universal value.
Grinding and inspection also need stable datums. If the final operation references a different surface from the original machining setup, datum transfer can create stack-up. Mark the primary functional relationship on the drawing and discuss how it will be held and measured.
CNC grinding RFQ checklist
- Material grade, starting condition and final hardness.
- Heat-treatment sequence and any required certification.
- Finished dimensions and tolerances on the grinding features.
- Datums, runout, roundness, cylindricity, flatness or parallelism as applicable.
- Surface-texture parameter, lay direction and measurement location.
- Mating part, fit, seal or motion requirement.
- Inspection method, report and sampling plan.
- Prototype quantity and expected repeat volume.
