CNC Machining Bronze: Alloy Selection, Applications, Cost & Design Guide
Compare bronze alloys for CNC machining and learn how load, wear, corrosion, stock form, design, inspection, and compliance affect custom parts.
Quick answer: Bronze can be an excellent CNC material for bushings, bearings, wear components, pump and valve parts, marine hardware, and electrical applications. The correct alloy depends on load, sliding speed, lubrication, corrosion exposure, required strength, electrical behaviour, stock form, and regulatory requirements.

Bronze Is a Family of Alloys, Not One Material
Using the word "bronze" on an RFQ is not enough. Copper-tin, leaded tin, phosphor, aluminium, silicon, and nickel-aluminium bronzes can behave differently in service and during machining. The drawing should specify a recognised alloy designation, product form, condition, and any required material documentation.
The Copper Development Association notes that aluminium bronzes combine high strength with corrosion and wear resistance, while C93200 bearing bronze is widely associated with low friction, anti-seizing behaviour, wear resistance, and good machinability. These are useful selection signals, but the final choice still needs the application's load, speed, lubrication, temperature, and environment.
Common Bronze Choices for CNC Parts
C93200 bearing bronze
C93200, often associated with SAE 660, is a common starting point for general-purpose bushings, bearings, thrust washers, wear plates, and machine components. It is selected for useful bearing behaviour and machinability. Buyers should confirm whether its composition is acceptable for the intended market and whether a lead-free alternative is required.
C95400 aluminium bronze
C95400 is considered when higher strength, wear resistance, toughness, or corrosion resistance is required. Typical applications include heavy-duty bushings, gears, valve and pump parts, marine hardware, and load-bearing components. Its higher strength and hardness can make machining more demanding than free-machining bearing bronzes, so tooling, setup, stock allowance, and inspection need to be planned accordingly.
Phosphor bronze
Phosphor bronze is used for springs, contacts, clips, wear parts, and components that need strength, formability, fatigue performance, or electrical behaviour. Product form matters: an alloy available as strip or plate may not be the practical choice for a thick turned bushing. Confirm the required form and temper before completing the design.
Bronze, Brass, or Stainless Steel?
Bronze is often preferred for sliding wear, anti-galling behaviour, and certain corrosive environments. Brass may offer easier machining and lower raw-material cost for fittings, connectors, and lower-load components. Stainless steel can provide higher strength or different corrosion performance but may create a less favourable metal-on-metal wear pair. Selection should be based on the mating material and operating condition, not colour or a generic material family.
What Makes Bronze CNC Machining Different?
Stock form and casting condition
Continuous-cast bar, centrifugal casting, plate, and wrought stock can have different availability, allowance, and property requirements. Near-net cast stock may reduce waste for large rings or bushings, while bar stock may simplify small turned parts. Specify whether cast or wrought material is acceptable and where final properties must apply.
Workholding and part distortion
Thin-wall bushings and rings can deform under chuck pressure. Soft jaws, collets, expanding mandrels, or staged machining may be needed. Critical bore and outside-diameter relationships should be inspected in the correct free or restrained condition.
Tooling, chips, and finish
Tool geometry, edge condition, cutting parameters, coolant strategy, and chip control should match the specific alloy. A process that works well for C93200 may not be optimal for a harder aluminium bronze. Finishing passes and controlled tool life help protect bore size, roundness, surface finish, and thread quality.
Design Guidance for Bronze Parts
- Specify the exact UNS, EN, GB, or other recognised alloy designation.
- Define the mating shaft material, hardness, finish, lubricant, and operating environment for bearing parts.
- Avoid unnecessarily thin walls and deep narrow grooves when function allows.
- Provide practical internal radii and tool access for milled features.
- State whether threads, bores, and fits apply before or after plating or another finish.
- Identify critical runout, roundness, concentric, and surface-finish requirements.
- Review lead-content and market-compliance requirements before approving the alloy.
What Affects the Cost?
Raw bronze stock can represent a significant share of part cost, especially for large diameters or high material removal. Cost also changes with alloy availability, cast versus wrought form, buy-to-fly ratio, setup count, thin-wall workholding, tolerance, surface finish, inspection, and quantity. A near-net stock form can reduce waste, but it may introduce minimum order quantities or additional procurement time.
Where the geometry is suitable, Fengnuo can review whether turning, milling, or combined CNC machining is the practical route.
Inspection for Bronze Bushings and Wear Parts
Inspection should focus on the features that control service: bore size, shaft clearance, outside diameter, wall thickness, roundness, runout, flange position, grooves, threads, and surface finish. Material certificates and alloy verification may be required for critical applications. Fengnuo's quality control and inspection process can be aligned with the drawing and order requirements.
